Jochen Robes von weiterbildungsblog.de macht auf eine Studie der kanadischen Open University aufmerksam, die das System WebCT evaluiert nachdem es von der Forma Vista aufgekauft wurde. Neu ist vor allem, dass alle bisherigen Versionen von WebCT nur noch bis zum Ende 2006 unterstützt werden: die 2.500 Universitäten, die WebCT stolz zum Kundenkreis zählt werden gezwungen sein auf die Nachfolge-Software “WebCT Vista” zu wechseln. Die neue Version erfordert Umstellungen der Lizenzen (erzwungenes Update) und z.T. auch neue Hardware. Die Studie schließt:

»With so many comparable open source softwares emerging for course management, containing more varied features than WebCT, one has to wonder: how long can such costly proprietary products survive? In the case of WebCT, the short answer to this is – possibly two years. If, as has been suggested, the vendor will no longer support earlier versions than Vista after 2006, it will either gather massive upgrade payments from many of its clients in the interim, or will lose them altogether to the new OSS systems. So is this WebCT’s last attempt to make large amounts of money in the face of the growing OSS challenge, its “last hurrah?”«

An diesem Sachverhalt setzen nun ePortfolios an, die George Siemens folgendermaßen beschreibt: “Definitions of eportfolios vary, but generally include the notion of a digital resource (personal artifacts, instructor comments) demonstrating growth, allowing for flexible expression (i.e. customized folders and site areas to meet the skill requirements of a particular job), and permitting access to varied interested parties (parents, potential employers, fellow learners, and instructors).”«

Publish/subscribe systems contain information producers, which publish events to the system, and information consumers, which subscribe to particular categories of events within the system. The system ensures the timely delivery of published events to all interested subscribers. In addition to supporting many-to-many communication, the primary requirement met by publish/subscribe systems is that producers and consumers of messages are anonymous to each other, so that the number of publishers and subscribers may dynamically change, and individual publishers and subscribers may evolve without disrupting the entire system.«
